KU Emblem – The Pen and the Sword

The KU emblem is based on the Japanese phrase Bun Bu Ryo Do. Bun Bu Ryo Do translates into “the pen and the sword”. Other interpretations are “the warrior and the scholar” or “war and peace”. This revolves around the philosophy that there is a need for balance between physical training and literary, cultural and intellectual pursuits.

Balance underpins the principles of Koryu Uchinadi by embracing the physical aspects of martial arts, as well as reflecting the cultural, moral and intellectual spirit of the art. A deep appreciation for the traditions of kara-te promote the importance of continuing to learn and grow as an individual. This concept of balance extends beyond martial arts to learnings in everyday life.
